Uncomfortable, Yet Comforted

Christian HipHop Artist, Andy Mineo, says in his song “Uncomfortable,” “...if you wanna live a comfortable life, make sure you never love nobody, be selfish and never sacrifice.” How I interpreted that is that to live comfortably, you’ve gotta live for yourself. You’ve gotta do your thing and forget about everyone else. But, as a Christian, that’s not what we are told to do. We are told to deny ourselves and live selflessly. We are told to live uncomfortably. It’s uncomfortable to live this way because it’s against everything we are taught and everything the culture and the media are about. We are told to fend for ourselves, to be the best out of everyone, to beat others in this race for success wealth, and power… but that is not what God asks of us.

The greatest example of living selflessly is Jesus Himself, as we see how He loved everybody, whether they loved Him or not. He was selfless, taking time out of His day to teach people and heal them. He also sacrificed His own life, dying for us to save us from our sins. That’s the kind of life we are told to live. Matthew 16:24 shows us how uncomfrotable it is for us to follow Jesus, as it says, “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’” Talk about uncomfortable… We are called to do the very thing Jesus did. We are called to deny ourselves, as He did when He took the time to heal and teach others. We are called to pick up our cross, as He did after being whipped, His skin torn and bones on display, on His way to save us from eternity without Him. We are called to follow Him, despite what the world or culture might say. We are called to live like Jesus, to follow in His footsteps.

So, as we strive to live like Jesus, though uncomfortable, we must be reminded of the comfort God can give us. He is our refuge, our shield, our safe place, and so as we live like He asks us, we know He is with us. We are comforted by the Man who asks us to live uncomfortably. This can give us great peace during persecution and confidence instead of humiliation. God sent the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit that was inside Jesus, and helped raise Him and many others from death to us, and as long as we accept Him, the Spirit will dwell in us. That is where our comfort comes from. It comes from the fact that we have access to God’s power. We work for riches in Heaven. We will succeed all others in the end, as we reach Heaven’s gates. Let God comfort you as you live uncomfortably, giving glory to His name.
