Pursuing Perfection

So a few summers ago, I got a summer job doing “Summer Help” with the janitors at the elementary school I attended and one of the first things I was assigned to do was clean lockers. I was given a rag and water with soap and I would rub down the lockers (as you can see). The more I scrubbed, the more dirty spots I saw. Like I’d do a general wipe down and then realize there was a sticky part or paint that needed to be wiped off, so the more I cleaned it the more dirty it seemed, really.

That made me think of reading the Bible or growing closer to God and how the more we read or the closer we grow to God, the more we realize or see our own sins. Truthfully, that can be really really difficult to deal with. It can really hurt your self esteem and how you feel abt yourself, but that’s only if you forget abt the bigger picture. The bigger picture is that we are saved from those sins as long as we are baptized in Christ. Then, as we grow closer, we are to pursue perfection.

See, life is not about accomplishing perfection, but instead pursuing it. We will never really be perfect. Ever since Adam and Eve, we have been a perverted, broken, sin-filled creation, though we were once a perfect creation, made in the image of our Creator, God, who is perfect. So, as we continue on this journey of faith, we are in the pursuit of perfection. To become more like Christ as we grow closer, though that may come with insecurity and doubt because we realize we are broken, but we are reminded also of our worth and how we have been saved from the things we are ashamed of.

In the end, we will reach perfection as long as our eyes are set on the Kingdom of God. Colossians 3:1-4 say, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

This shows us that as we grow closer to Christ, repenting of our sins as we notice them, we are also suiting ourselves up for Heaven. We are preparing ourselves to be in the presence of perfection, of Jesus. You cannot earn a place in Heaven, but it is not given to you either. Perfection is only found in Christ, so we must pursue Him and we will see what true perfection is. With that, keep scrubbing your lockers and reading your Bibles. Keep growing closer to Christ and pursuing perfection, and one day you will see just how great God is as He guides you on your journey with and toward Him.
